I also have a 6.5x284 for getting out longer. I have done the 6.5x55 for the same reasons as what you want, it fits the bill for that perfectly, mine is a magnum sporter weight 26in barrel #4 that I mainly shoot 140gr projectiles out of, I don't understand why your smith says there could be feeding issues, the 98 mauser will feed anything, even short 6mm br cases without projectiles, my 6.5x55 was a 243 before being rebarreled and I do polish up the feed rails to get the cases to feed perfectly straight but once the cases slip up behind the claw extractor they feed straight in. We refer to these as 'Series 3' in the diagram below. These include Mauser Model 98, Centurion, FN, Interarms Mark X, Parker Hale 1200, and Santa Barbara receivers with a front receiver outside ring approximately 1-3/8' in diameter. If I were to do a rifle for what you are saying it would be used for I would pick the 6.5x55 or 7x57 Large Ring Mauser actions have a thread shank diameter of 1.10' and 12 threads per inch. These rifles both shoot the well known 150G Interlok soft point very well, & I am in the process of working up a load with the new 170G SST. Wide bullet, wide wound, quick kill it seems. Him & I have shot numerous reds with it, they do not get up. My brother also shoots on old K98 8x57 whcih shoots around 1 minute. I have it shooting reloads at half minute for dad. in fact he bought a new one to do this barrel. Arthur Cleland Hamilton Gunsmith has the rheemer for 8X57. I built my dad a custom 8x57 last year using a Howa action, worked over the trigger myself & rebarrelled with a Shillen magnum contour 24" barrel. Some may say it's a bit boring on this but I personally rate the 8x57 as a very reliable & effective red deer killing calibre. Yeah it really depends what you want from the rifle re: range & animals.
